Sphingosines

Sphingoid bases such as sphingosine, dihydrosphingosine, and phytosphingosine are the characteristic structural units of sphingolipids. Sphingolipids are widely distributed in animal and plant tissues, particularly in cell membranes where they serve numerous vital cellular functions.
