Myristoyl-L-carnitine is a naturally occurring long-chain acylcarnitine involved in the beta-oxidation of long-chain fatty acids. Myristoyl-L-carnitine may be used as an analytical standard for high-performance liquid chromatography or LC MS/MS studies. Myristoyl-L-carnitine may be useful as a marker in the diagnosis of genetic metabolic disorders and is a potential marker for very-long-chain coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency (VLCADD). Plasma levels of myristoyl-L-carnitine are decreased in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and increased in patients with end-stage renal disease. The product is used primarily as a control for MS/MS.
