Description

Valproic acid (VPA), valproate sodium, and divalproex are well-established anticonvulsant medications widely recognized for their efficacy in controlling various types of seizures associated with epilepsy. These compounds are critical therapeutic agents for patients managing seizure disorders, working to stabilize neuronal activity in the brain. Valproic acid was first made in 1881 and came into medical use in 1962. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. Beyond its classical role in neurology, Valproic acid has emerged as a molecule of significant interest in cancer therapy research due to its potent epigenetic modulating capabilities. VPA acts as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, directly binding to the catalytic center of HDACs in vitro. This inhibition relieves HDAC-dependent transcriptional repression, leading to the crucial hyperacetylation of histones in both cultured cells and in vivo models.
