Description
Human beta-defensin-3 (hBD-3) is a unique, non-hemolytic antimicrobial peptide originally isolated from human psoriatic scales and cloned from keratinocytes. This potent peptide exhibits salt-insensitive, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against a wide range of pathogenic microbes, including multi-drug resistant S. aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium. Found in keratinocytes and airway epithelial cells, hBD-3 expression can be induced by TNF-alpha and bacterial contact, suggesting its crucial role in the innate epithelial defense against infections in tissues like the skin and lungs (e.g., in conditions like cystic fibrosis).
