Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is a zoonotic member of the Orthopoxvirus genus in the Poxviridae family1. It is the next most pathogenic poxvirus after smallpox. Two genetic clades, West African and Central African (Congo Basin), have been characterized; the latter is capable of human-to-human transmission1,2.
