HIV-1, responsible for the majority of HIV infections worldwide, is a lentivirus that is transmitted through the exchange of bodily fluids, such as blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk during unprotected sexual contact, sharing of needles or syringes, or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. HIV is the causative agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
